A desire to return to Constructed and some notes about the state of things

I was going through my (now expansive) magic online collection and noticed just how much more meaning the cards from old have to me. And by old I mean Ravnica. That’s when I started getting into competitive magic. That’s when I had no money and no way to generate cards. So as a result, I strictly played constructed back then. For the past 4 sets, I’ve been playing strictly limited. This goes back to my return to magic after my 4 month departure. I’m now positioned to be playing all of those constructed matches (namely standard, but also Zendikar block, extended, and to a far lesser degree Classic) that I want to. I definitely feel a disconnect with M10, most of Alara and Eventide as I just didn’t play constructed when those sets were in play. Now hopefully, with my constructed mind back in full gear, I’ll be good to go.

Got a deck? Send it to me!

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s lasting impression…

If someone were to ask me what my lasting impression of attending Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s conversation this past Saturday was, it’d simply be that she has a very soothing voice.

Her intelligence is unmistakable and her demeanor is very elegant, but the thing that really left an impression was that she put the people in the room at ease with her voice.

It’s a very interesting quality to have. Especially as a moderate Supreme Court Justice.

How did the judge miss the trigger?

Posted in General-Random on October 18th, 2009 by Sebastian – Be the first to comment

It makes no sense that nobody slowed the game down and checked the trigger on the Angel of Despair. It’s a clear and deliberate trigger that must happen when the cards come into play. That cost “Van” the game, the match, and fundamentally changed the look of the tournament.

I realize everyone is human, but I feel bad for Van knowing that trigger was missed both by him, the coverage team, and the judges (As for whether Kibler missed it, I’m not going to judge/comment on that. Whether or not he saw it, I don’t blame him for not mentioning it if he did. He clearly had the game lost had the trigger resolved as it should have.)

That said, there should be a caveat when we discuss how Baneslayer Angel beat Progenitus.

At Yale, listening to Jimmy Wales

Posted in General-Random on October 7th, 2009 by Sebastian – 2 Comments

So I’m working on my comp sci 201 problem set. It’s a pain. A really really big pain.

Oh and studying for japanese. Which is also a pain. A really really really big pain.

But I’m also listening to Jimmy Wales, founder co-founder of Wikipedia. Now that’s exciting.

I love Yale.

Edit: Apparently the whole founder,co-founder thing is a really touchy issue. Fixed (now back to that problem set…)

Edit2: You know, the comment brought up an interesting point. Did Jimmy Wales come to speak for free? I was under the impression he did, after all, it was a “free culture society” event haha.
